Several Willow Springs Elementary students were recognized this month at Youth Art Month (YAM) held at the Missouri State Capitol.
This marks the 11th year WSE students have participated in the annual event, which celebrates student creativity from across the state. This year, five students were selected to attend, accompanied by their families.
While at the Capitol, students had the opportunity to visit the House of Representatives Chamber with State Representative Lisa Durnell. During their visit, Representative Durnell arranged a tour that included the Whispering Room and a climb to the top of the Capitol, offering scenic views of Jefferson City.
Students also explored the building’s artwork and history, including a stop in the Thomas Hart Benton murals room, which features detailed murals depicting everyday life in Missouri.
The day concluded with the YAM award ceremony held in the Rotunda. Four students were selected to represent Willow Springs Elementary:
Lisa Wake, Kindergarten
Charlie Mayberry, 1st Grade
Madelyn Gorla, 3rd Grade
Nixon Wake, 4th Grade
In addition to the YAM recognitions, fourth-grade student Nathaniel Hood received a special honor. His artwork was selected by Missouri Senator Brad Hudson for inclusion in the Senate Student Fine Arts Exhibit. His piece will be displayed in the Capitol. Nathaniel was also presented with a framed decree and a copy of his artwork by Lieutenant Governor David Wasinger.
This experience provided students with a unique opportunity to showcase their artistic talents while gaining firsthand exposure to Missouri’s state government and history.
