Recycling

The school year started with a big win for sustainability as Mr. Matthew Knapp’s high school recycling class rolled out its first bale of cardboard, tipping the scales at just over 1,100 pounds.

On the first day of school, students learned the full process: sorting materials, operating the baler under supervision, monitoring safety, and securing the finished bale for pickup. Alongside Mr. Knapp, our dedicated paraprofessionals worked with students throughout each step, modeling teamwork and safe practices.

ā€œThis class gives students real-world skills while making a measurable impact on our community,ā€ said Mr. Knapp. ā€œEvery bale we produce keeps valuable material out of the landfill.ā€

Learning That Lasts
The recycling course blends hands-on experience with career-connected learning. Students practice:
Workplace safety and equipment operation
Logistics and record-keeping (weights, dates, materials)
Collaboration and communication
Environmental stewardship and problem-solving
Community Impact

In addition to collecting recyclables on campus, the class is partnering with local businesses to expand its efforts. By the end of the semester, the program aims to divert tons of cardboard and other materials from the landfill, all while building a stronger culture of sustainability.
